New Israel Fund – Adam Ognall visits Menorah

Saturday 25 Nov at 1.00 pm

The New Israel Fund is an organisation advancing democracy and equality for all Israelis, based on the vision of Israel’s founders. Join us after Kiddush to hear Adam speak on:

Is Israel for Jews like me? Being Jewish in Israel: current controversies and the role of the Diaspora

Issues of religion and state are in the news daily in Israel; from recognition of Reform Judaism, to conversion, to whether the ultra-orthodox should serve in the Army, to Shabbat or of course the Kotel agreement there are no lack of ‘hot potatoes’. We will explore what these issues are, why they are contentious and crucially what they might mean for Israel’s relationship with the Diaspora. As Rabbi Rick Jacobs, the Head of the Reform movement in the US recently said, these issues are ‘a battle that’s for the soul of Israel.’”

Please bring some vegetarian lunch to share after Kiddush.

Do register below.

MAD presents ‘Don’t Dress for Dinner’

Tuesday 28 Nov at 7.30 pm - Saturday 2 Dec at 7.30 pm

Menorah Arts and Drama proudly present ‘Don’t Dress for Dinner’ by Marc Camoletti. The play is a breathtaking farce with quick lines, fast pace and great humour based on classic farce misunderstandings and mistaken identities. You don’t want to miss it!

The cast includes Sharon Copitch, Steven Holt, Deborah Nesbit, Andrew Pal, Emma Roberts and Alan Silman. It is directed by Frank Vigon with assistant directors Kerry Barlow and Karen McLoughlin, and produced by Gary Copitch. For more information contact

Film Club Dec: Ahead of Time… Ruth Gruber

Tuesday 5 Dec at 7.45 pm

2009/USA – Documentary, Dir: Robert Richman, 73 mins

At 97 years old, Brooklyn-born Ruth still has that same sharp intellect and determination that propelled her to become the world’s youngest PhD at age 20. At 24, she became a New York Herald Tribune reporter and photographer, and during the same year was the first journalist to enter the Soviet Arctic Circle. A trusted member of the Roosevelt Administration during WWII, she was handed a dangerous secret mission. A feminist before Feminism, Ruth was never just an observer; she was a participant in the making of history. The film combines vérité footage with interviews and archival material.
