From Mogadishu to Manchester: my journey to freedom – with a guest speaker, who will be talking about the Somali civil war and its effects on Somali society, her experience of growing up first in an orthodox, conservative Islamic family, then finding Reform Judaism and her new adventures, combining story, tradition and a lifelong passion for food.

Our speaker was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1981. Following the civil war, she traveled extensively to Djibouti, Yemen, Canada and eventually to the UK in her late teens. She studied biological science at the University of Manchester and then found her way to private banking, qualifying as an Investment Advisor. In 2018 she applied for series 15 of Masterchef and took part in the amateur’s competition. Amal has since launched a company – Amal’s Pantry, inspired by her Somali heritage, her travels and her lifelong passion for cooking.

Film Club: Remember Baghdad

Tuesday 2 Apr at 7.45 pm

2016 UK Documentary 1h9 dir: Fiona Murphy

“Jews, Muslims, Christians – we were all Iraqis – it was paradise.” On the 100th anniversary of the British invasion in 1917, ‘Remember Baghdad’ is the untold story of the Jews in Iraq, an unmissable insight into how the country developed from a completely new perspective. Five Jewish families look back on the history of Baghdad’s once vibrant community. This is an illuminating documentary composed of intimate interviews, extensive personal and news archive films, as well as footage from Iraq today, letting us follow one Iraqi Jew on a journey home, back to Baghdad.

Inclusivity Shabbat Morning Service

Saturday 6 Apr at 10.30 am

1 Nisan 5779 ~ Shabbat Ha-chodesh ~ Tazria ~ Shabbat Rosh Chodesh ~ Leviticus 12:1-8 ~ Genesis 1:14-19 ~ Exodus 12:1-11 ~ 2 Kings 23:1-27 OR Ezra 6:19-7:10

This morning our Shabbat service will highlight Inclusivity, the first of many such, it is hoped. By this we mean that we wish to invite and encourage members and friends of Menorah who have atypical needs or a disability, and who may not ordinarily come on a Shabbat, to come and participate in our service. In so doing, we recognise everyone as an individual and not as a group whose needs can or might only be met through special programmes or an occasional visit to synagogue. We are therefore opening our doors and services for meaningful participation where our service will enable us to ask, listen and be more Inclusive.

Further information on the format of the service will be provided by Rabbi Fabian during Shabbat service on 30 March and before Ark on 31 March. We welcome all members to join us on 6 April. If you would like to participate in the service, please contact Reuben Saffer (reuben@menorah.org.uk).

MAD Drama Workshop

Sunday 7 Apr at 2.00 pm - 5.00 pm

Menorah Arts and Drama (MAD) will be holding a theatre workshop, designed for absolute beginners and there is no expectation that you will want to audition for the main MAD production to be held 26 to 30 November. (However, you may feel inspired to give it a go!)

The workshop will consist of various improvisation exercises.  The last time we did this the overwhelming feedback was that people enjoyed the opportunity for dramatic expression and experimentation.  Even if you don’t want to act on stage you will gain confidence in speaking and performing in public.

The workshop will be led by our two directors Frank Vigon and Karen McLoughlin.

Tickets £5.00 including refreshments. Please book below.
