Rebuke and the Limits of ‘Live and let Live’. Is it our obligation to rebuke, for example, those who currently do not observe social distancing? What purpose does rebuke serve, and what can tradition teach us about it as we head towards the High Holy Days?
During the 10 weeks preceding the High Holy Days, the haftarah is determined not by the content of the Torah portion, but by the date. Three “Haftarot of Rebuke” are red before Tisha B’Av and seven “Haftarot of Consolation” after leading us to the High Holy Days. This Shabbat we read the second so-called “Haftarah of Rebuke”. I hope you will join me to explore the general concept of rebuke and its role in our lives.
