Conversion to Judaism

We welcome people who wish to enquire about conversion to Judaism.  The process of conversion is in accordance with the Beit Din (Rabbinic Court) of the Movement for Reform Judaism. You can read more below about the process and then your first step would be to contact our Rabbi for an initial chat.

OUR VALUES

Menorah respects the long-standing Jewish tradition of valuing minority and dissenting opinion. Our members hold a wide range of views and express their Judaism in varying ways. However, as a community we are mainly in agreement with the following statements which are based on values expressed by the Movement for Reform Judaism.

 Reform Judaism:

    • treasures both Jewish tradition and Judaism’s ability to evolve in response to the contemporary world
    • a life of integrity based on a process of informed decision making
    • an uncompromising commitment to gender equality and inclusion, responding to the changing realities of our community
    • seeks out new opportunities and spaces in which to welcome and engage with members, unaffiliated Jews and those with non-Jewish partners
    • means building a just society through social action and tikkun olam, repair of the world
  • On Israel:
    • we are a Zionist congregation.  We have a commitment to the existence of the State of Israel and its security.  We believe that the pursuit of peace is the highest ideal and priority. We are deeply committed to democracy; human rights and social justice; and religious pluralism.
    • we believe that Israel should be a Jewish state and a state for all its citizens.
    • we believe that exponents of moderate, liberal Judaism should ally with moderate liberal secularists and work together to combat both religious and secular extremism
    • we support organisations dedicated to building bridges – both between Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs and between Israeli Jews and Palestinians on the West Bank and in Gaza.

LGBTQ+ Inclusion statement

Menorah is a welcoming and inclusive community and we aim to ensure that our policies and practices fully enable participation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other gender non-conforming members and their families.

We ensure that LGBTQ+ members are welcome and able to take part in our religious practices and in the entire community life of the congregation, including the range of lifecycle rituals and ceremonies, making sure that appropriate inclusive forms of liturgy are available as required.

Menorah is committed to making our educational and youth programmes a welcoming and safe environment for ALL children and young people. We will provide inclusive education that embraces the diversity of relationships and identities and teach our young people to actively champion our values of social justice.

As a community we celebrate the diversity of human experience and undertake to listen and learn to continue to reflect our progressive Jewish vision both within our community and in the wider world.

Accessiblity
statement

Our building has many features to aid accessibility.

For those with mobility issues, there is a short walk on flat ground from the car park to the front door, although there is seating midway for those who wish to enjoy a rest. There is a vehicle drop-off zone close to the building, together with reserved parking spaces for those who need close access to the building and extra room to access the vehicle. The building is wheelchair accessible and is all on one floor with wide doors to the sanctuary, library and social suites. There is a ramp-up to the Bimah. Seats in the sanctuary are movable and visitors using wheelchairs can be accommodated in the congregation alongside seating for companions.

A gender-neutral bathroom with wide access is available for all who wish to use it.

We also have an induction loop system for the hearing impaired.

From time to time we hold an inclusive  B’Yachdav service which is shorter and more informal than our usual service and is designed for those with diverse needs and anyone else who would wish to join in.

If you are visiting and would like to inform us of your particular needs so that we can ensure a comfortable and welcoming visit please do contact the office in advance.
